Any guesses about what she talks about the most, and with the fondest memories 17 years later? The mishaps. I love it! (The 80s photos don't hurt the entertainment value, either... :))

Just a friendly reminder: as you plan your wedding, and stress about everything being perfect, and then inevitably find that everything didn't turn out "exactly right"... those mishaps are nothing to be upset about. Chances are, you'll look back and laugh years down the road!

Mishaps Make the Memories: Anniversary Vacation Mishap

Weddings aren't the only place where a mishap can occur. Sometimes they happen in marriage too. Gasp. I know... I know... hard to believe, but true.

Case in point: My hubbie and I recently celebrated our anniversary by taking a Mediterranean cruise. We flew in to Rome, and ended up at the exact baggage claim belt we waited at on our honeymoon four years ago. We remembered it well. Why?  Because we made lots of memories there on our honeymoon when our bags never came off, and we spent the first three days of our trip without them. No fun... but we were in la-la-newlywed land, and it turned into something we laughed about. So, fast forward four years, and there we were again, waiting for our bags to arrive, laughing, and joking about the last time we waited for hours to no avail.

Before too long, the hubbie's bag arrived... but 3 hours later, we were leaving the airport without mine. Somehow, it decided to travel to Detroit. Why it wouldn't want to come to Europe with us is beyond me! Silly bag. So, there I was: no bag... getting on a seven day cruise...no cute cruise clothes...no make-up... no straw hat. And after the initial round of every emotion under the sun (including irritation, anger, devastation, and utter disbelief) do you know what flashed through my mind?  This blog, and my little "Mishaps make the memories" motto. It was decision time. Did I let this ruin or hamper my long awaited, and much planned for trip? Or did I get over it, laugh and go on having an amazing time?

I promise, it was a decision, and a tough one at that. It would have been really easy to let this spoil my fun, and the fun of my cute hubbie (who is NOT a crier...at all... but admitted later that he was close to tears when he realized I wasn't getting my bag). But honestly, it was also pretty easy to say, "Oh well. Let's go have fun." Luckily, that's the route I took, and we had a stellar vacation filled with amazing memories despite the fact that my bag didn't arrive until 5 days later.

In addition to a great vacation, we got some added bonuses from losing the bag: hilarious memories of going into European pharmacies looking for mascara, shopping together for cute Italian shirts, an outrageous encounter with an Italian pajama shop keeper, and tons of memories of a certain baggage terminal in Rome where we've spent way too much time laughing, gasping and trying not to cry together. :) 

The mishaps really do make the memories if you let them. Promise.

Mishaps Make the Memories: Dr. Phil's Take on Wedding Mishaps

So, confession: I'm not really the type that watches Dr. Phil's show. However, when I came across this bit on his website about wedding mishaps, I felt pretty validated in what I've been saying all along. The man must be a genius if he agrees with me: wedding mishaps are not the end of the world! Who knew? Ooo oo oo... I did, I did! :)

I love the advice that he gives the bride who had quite a few (ok...more than a few) mishaps "ruin" her big day, and thus her life:

"And you say this was the most embarrassing time in your life? Let me tell you, you looked absolutely stunning in that wedding. You were absolutely beautiful. You were in a room filled with people who love you. There's nothing embarrassing about that. And when the limo showed up, or whether the music came in on cue, or whatever, it pales in comparison to what really, really is important here. You have nothing to be embarrassed about. I mean, you were surrounded by people who loved you, and this worked. You are married and you are happily married, and I promise you, the day will come when you're able to see this differently and get a kick out of it. I mean, you'll remember."

Amen, Dr. Phil. Amen. :)

Ah, the myriad of ways that a wedding can go wrong. This collection of wedding bloopers shows them all. Water accidents, fire accidents, grooms getting a bit crazy with the cake... oh so many disasters waiting to happen. But don't let that discourage you! The mishaps definitely make some of the most fun (and funny) memories!

Dad in a sombrero making a toast? Is that a photo of him in football gear charging into the reception? Wait... is that him in a wading pool?

This bride has some memorable, goofy photos from her wedding, but not because her new father-in-law is a nutty fruitcake who sabotaged her wedding. The photos actually came about because of a horrible wedding mishap that I hope NEVER happens to any of you: the grooms dad got very very ill, and couldn't attend the wedding day festivities. Ouch. After the fact, a loving sister used Photoshop to make dad feel like he was part of the big day. I love the "try to make the best out of a rotten wedding situation" attitude, and the photos are pretty funny too, so I thought I'd share.

To tell you the truth, I'm surprised things like this don't happen more often!

I remember at my wedding venue, there was a big reflection pool. The videographer had me and my husband balance on the concrete lip around it, and walk towards each other from opposite sides of the pool. In my long cumbersome dress and high heels, I thought for sure I was going to fall in. Maybe that's why this video made me giggle.

Better bushes than water I suppose. But either way, you just have to laugh. Enjoy!

Brides always picture the perfect entrance. The moment of walking down the aisle has been dreamed about since we were tiny little things, and we probably spend lots of time planning it, rehearsing it and making sure it's just right.

This bride encountered a little snag in her plans. But I LOVE the way she handles it... and bet it's something that she remembers with a smile for the rest of her life.

Lessons learned from this wedding bloopers compilation (in no particular order):
*Eat breakfast the day of your wedding, and never, under any circumstances, lock your knees.
*Consider serving non-alcholic drinks and pretending they're real. The guests might be confused about the lack of buzz, but your outdoor tent will probably remain standing.
*Never is it ok to attack the bride: whether it's with pie, a slice of cake, or a whole cake... whether she attacked you first or not... makes no difference. DON'T DO IT!

Ok...so, I think this is the perfect example of why you need to have a sense of humor about the unplanned moments on your wedding day. If this was me, I'd be laughing my head off and enjoying every moment of our klutzy-ness...in fact, I was giggling as I watched them.

But this bride and groom didn't seem to think it was too funny, which made the situation a little...awkward? Hopefully they'll look back and chuckle...but if not, we'll do it for them!
