Donald and I met at our friend Kim's birthday party in a restaurant/bar. There were about a dozen of us (ratio 2-3 women per each man) around a large table meant for 8. I noticed that he and I had a similar sense of humor and thought to myself that he'd make a good friend as we "got" each other's jokes. As the evening progressed, and the crowd thinned, Kim ended up next to Don and I was still opposite him. Kim asked Don what he was looking for in a woman. He replied, "One who doesn't smoke and doesn't have kids." I raised my hand and said "I qualify." He said, "OK, let's get married." I replied, "OK." We then told the other people (who were not paying any attention to us) that we were getting married and they'd get their invitations in the mail.
That was a Friday evening and he asked me out for the next evening. Saturday evening he asked me out for Sunday. Sunday he asked me out for Monday (he knew I was happily single and dating other guys -- figured he'd keep me booked solid so they wouldn't have a chance!). It worked and we dated for a year (which included Christmas, New Years, and Valentine's Day without a proposal).
On the 1st anniversary of when we met, he insisted we go to the same restaurant/bar for a drink before meeting up with my brother and mother to go to dinner at another restaurant. He was so fidgety that I thought, "He brought me here to break up with me!" Finally, he reached into his pocket and pulled out a box with an antique ring (he's an antique dealer) and proposed! Of course, I said YES and we've been married 22 years. For our 20th wedding anniversary we renewed our vows. (picture taken by Nancy Miller Photography).
I love stories where there seemed to be an inkling right from the start... Thanks for sharing Nancy and Donald!
Have a great weekend everyone...and keep those stories coming!
