Wedded Bliss Wednesday: Debbie & Brent

Today I have what I think is a very special treat for you all! My mom is actually in town--she flew across the country to spend some fun, fall-y time with one of her four favorite daughters. :) Since she's been happily married for almost 32 years, I thought I'd share a little of her bliss. She was a little...reluctant to be featured, but I think I finally won! :) Enjoy!

Me: "So Mom, I've been telling the Flaunt It readers that you've been happily married for 32 years. I've always gotten a kick out of your marriage... My whole life, I've seen you guys do all the grocery shopping together holding hands. I've seen you guys have tons of movie and shake nights in front of the TV. I've seen you guys have all your kids marry and move out. And most recently, I've seen you guys ride around together on your new little scooters! I've seen you fight like cats and dogs at times. I've seen you compromise over home improvement projects. I've seen him get annoyed about finances, and you get annoyed about him not liking sunny vacations. But I've never doubted that you loved each other. What's the secret to having a loooooooong, happy marriage?"

Debbie: (laughing...laughing...laughing....) "Be honest with each other, ya know? If you're mad...tell them! If you're happy...tell them! If you're proud of them...tell them! I don't hold back; you know me. You know how it is when you hold things in! Talk to each other!"

Me: "So, in 32 years there are lots of ups and downs. How do you keep a marriage on the positive side of the line, and make it a happy one? How do you deal with the down times?"

Debbie: "You hit a point where you realize that guys and girls are different. You hit a point where you realize the two of you will never be alike, and there will be times when you don't agree. Men and women look at things totally different, and they feel totally different. I think once I realized that, it was easier to shrug off the little things and disagreements in life that don't really matter one way or another. Also, I think it's important to spend time together."

Me: "Yeah...you and dad spend tons of time together!"

Debbie: "Oh yeah. All the time. I can honestly say, that if you're dad is home from work, we're together. If he's out doing yard work, I go out with him. He comes shopping with me. We go on walks together. We make our plans together for the day."

Me: "Ok mom. So the time has come. Do you want to share a wedded bliss moment with our readers?"

Debbie: (laughing) "Do I have to? Let's see... One thing your dad has always done from day one is make sure I have gas in my car. That sounds weird, but I have never put gas in my car since I was married. There have even been times late at night when he's said, 'What are your plans tomorrow?' and I've said, 'Oh...going to lunch with my sisters...' or this and that. And he'll disappear for a while, while I'm washing up for bed. The next morning when I'm leaving and running late, I'll look down and my car, that needed gas the night before, has been filled and I'll think, 'Ohhhhh...how cute! He went for gas late last night!". There are times when he's snuck home from his mid shift, late late at night and just snuck and filled my car before he even comes in. My car is rarely under half a tank, because he's always kept an eye on it, and just gone and got gas for me. Isn't that cute? I should probably share more of an 'Ahhhh....cute....' moment, but for me this one's big!"

Me: "It's perfect mom. Perfect."

A big thanks to my mom for sharing, and a wish for all my readers that you have a blissful, realistic 32 + years of marriage ahead of you!

Until Friday...keep emailing those stories!
